Japanese Maglev Train Breaks Speed Record

An experimental Japanese maglev train hit a top speed of 374 miles per hour in tests on Tuesday, setting a new world record. Now that’s fast! This record-breaking train and other maglev trains use electromagnets to levitate its carriages inches above the track and propel them forward and back.

During the Japanese train’s trial runs, it reached speeds above 370 mph for at least 10.8 seconds while traveling on a track in the Yamanashi Prefecture, located along the south-central coast of the main Japanese island of Honshu. In that brief time span, the train covered 1.1 miles.

Test witness Takeo Ookanda told CNN that observers who saw the train rip by erupted with applause as the new record was set.
