Longhorned Beetles Use Timing To Find Mates 

For us humans, meeting that special someone often comes down to timing, and it turns out – the same goes for longhorned beetle.

According to a new study published in the Journal of Chemical Ecology, male longhorned beetles from various species time the release of their mating pheromones at different times during the day or year to minimize sending mixed signals to female beetles.

“We found that beetles that produce the same pheromone are active at different times of day — and that beetles that are active at the same time of day produce different pheromones,” study author Robert F. Mitchell, an insect researcher at the University of Arizona, said in a press release.

“Smell is an under appreciated sense in people — but when you talk about insects, many ‘see’ their world in chemicals,” Mitchell added. “The most common thing they say with pheromones is, ‘I’m looking for a mate.’”

Rich People Will Become Immortal ‘God-Like’ Cyborgs In 200 Years – Historian 

Rich people living 200 years from now are likely to become “god-like” immortal cyborgs, while the poor will die out, an historian has claimed.

Yuval Noah Harari, a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said the merger of humans and machines would be the greatest evolution since the appearance of life.

He added the greatest minds in computer engineering already believe death is a mere technological problem with a solution.

Harari said advances in technology will enable humans to become god-like creatures, as different from today’s humans as chimpanzees are from us.

The historian is author of the acclaimed Sapiens: A Brief History of Human Kind, a book which has already been translated into more than 30 languages.

What’s In This ‘Dark’ Globular Star Cluster? 

While conducting studies using the ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chile, a team of astronomers recently discovered an unusual, overstuffed type of globular star clusters in orbit around the giant elliptical galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128) that may be packed with dark matter.

The Observatory refers to these objects as a new class of “dark” globular star clusters, and many are brighter and more massive than the approximately 150 clusters currently orbiting the Milky Way. The clusters may contain a tremendous amount of dark matter, as mentioned above, or they may have a massive black hole hidden in their midst, according to Space.com.

“Globular clusters and their constituent stars are keys to understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies,” explained lead author Matt Taylor, a Ph. D. student at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile whose work has been published by The Astrophysical Journal.

Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana: A Treasure Trove Of Ancient Manuscripts 

The main public square of the Italian city of Venice is the Piazza San Marco (St. Mark’s Square).

Around this square are some of the most recognizable buildings in Venice.The most famous of these are the Basilica Cattedrale Patriarcale di San Marco (St. Mark’s Basilica) and its iconic bell tower, the Campanile di San Marco (St. Mark’s Campanile).

 As St. Mark is the patron saint of the city, it is little wonder that many of the public buildings in Venice are named after him. Another building on the Piazza San Marco named after the city’s patron saint is the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana (the National Library of St. Mark’s).  

The Biblioteca Marciana is located at the end of the Piazza San Marco, and separated from the Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace) by the Piazzetta San Marco. This building, which symbolizes the city’s wealth and tradition of public investment in intellectual and artistic pursuits, was designed by the Italian architect, Jacopo Sansovino.

The Ancient Egyptian Civilization, Thousands Of Years Older Than Previously Thought  

Some evidence casts doubt on the actual chronology of Egyptian pharaohs.

The Turin King List, also known as the Turin Royal Canon, raises many questions that science does not seem to accept. Despite attempts at reconstruction, approximately 50% of the papyrus remains missing. This papyrus as presently constituted is 1.7 m long and 0.41 m wide, broken into over 160 fragments.

The Egyptian hieratic papyrus thought to date from the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II contradicts the established dates and chronologies on the Egyptian world. Researchers are coming across great amount of information which suggests that Egypt is much older than what archaeology and history are telling us.

 The Turin King List is currently located over 3000 kilometers from the land of the Pharaohs, deposited in the Egyptian museum in Turin, Italy. It was discovered in 1822 by Bernardino Drovetti in the ancient Egyptian capital of Thebes. The list was translated by Jean-François Champollion, known primarily as the decipherer of the Egyptian hieroglyphs and a founding figure in the field of Egyptology.

Mentally Troubled Inmate Is Literally Eating The Jail, Costs State $1 Million In Medical Bills 

17-year-old Lamont Cathey, who was jailed for breaking into a pizza parlor in Chicago, is proving to be a costly inmate to handle.

 For the past 16 months, mentally disturbed Cathey has been consuming metal objects – ranging from toe screws to needles, to drawing pins, and even strips of leather.

He has been rushed to the prison’s hospital 24 different times to have these items removed, costing the State a whopping $1.3 million!

Cathey used to be a promising basketball player until he was accused of stealing money from a safe at a pizzeria over a year ago. He is yet to go on trial, and as he waits for a sentence, he has taken to eating “anything he could get his hands on” around his cell.

He reportedly swallowed parts of a security camera, tore apart a $50,000 hospital bed, and broke open a medical device to swallow the parts inside.

Wolf Spiders ‘Sing’ To Win The Hearts Of Mates 

Spiders might not be thought of as musical creatures, but a new study from the University of Cincinnati could change that.

Being presented this week at the annual meeting of the Acoustical Society of America, the new study revealed that male wolf spiders use their legs to generate a purring sound when trying to woo a female.

The study team said their work offers clues to how animals evolved to use sound as a means of communication. The researchers said they started their work based on knowledge that wolf spiders, and many other spiders, have sensory organs in their legs that they use to detect vibrations caused by the movement of prey and predators.

“I decided I wanted to find out whether this species was using airborne sound to communicate,” study team member Alexander Sweger told BBC News.

Earth’s Moon: A Perfect Artificial Construction Too Good To Be True 

We’ve seen recent theories that the moon isn’t real, but an artificially created by left over space debris from Earth.

This theory is proven incorrect in light of the current theory of gravity, indicating that a large object collects all loose material, leaving none for the formation of another large body.

So far, none of the theories are particularly compelling due to the lack of evidence that neither Earth nor the Moon appear to have been physically altered by a close encounter that occurred in the distant past.

Decapitation Discovery Reveals Gruesome Practices Of The Ancient Incas

'Mind Control’ Prosthetic Allows For Smooth Movement 

Erik G. Sorto was paralyzed from the neck down due to a gunshot wound when he was 21.

 However, he has become the first person in the world to have a neural prosthetic device implanted in the part of the brain where intentions are made.

With clinical collaboration of Caltech, Keck Medicine of USC, and Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, Sorto has been able to move a robotic arm just by thinking and using his imagination. He has been able to perform handshakes, drink a beverage, and even play “rock, paper, scissors,” using this arm, according to the study.

In the past, neural prosthetic devices were implanted in the brain’s movement center, the motor cortex, which allowed patients with paralysis to control robotic limbs. However, the movements were jerky and not natural. Caltech researchers hoped to find a way to make the movement of neuroprosthetics smooth and humanlike.

Led by principal investigator Richard Andersen, neurosurgeon Charles Y. Lui, professor of neurological surgery, neurology, and biomedical engineering at USC, and neurologist Mindy Aisen, chief medical officer at Ranchos Los Amigos, the clinical trial attempted to connect the implant device in the part of the brain that controlled the intentions to move rather than the movement directly.

Who Pulled The Plug On Lake Mead? Earthquake Draining Lake Mead?  

Friday morning,May 4th, Las Vegas was rattled by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake and caused roads and bridges to be closed.

The quake seem to only appear in the local papers in Vegas, and was treated as irreverent by the mainstream media, however a new development has taken a puzzling turn.

In the 36 hours that’s passed since the tremors, Lake Mead has had a dramatic drop in its water levels.

As reported by Kimber Laux And Cassandra Taloma of the Las Vegas Journal:  A 4.8 magnitude earthquake shook Las Vegas and surrounding areas Friday morning, forcing loose a rubber casing on a bridge and leading state officials to close Spaghetti Bowl interchanges for several hours.

Astronaut Sees ‘UFO’ Near Space Station  

When any kind of unidentified flying object floats by the International Space Station, you can bet astronauts are going to notice. That’s just what happened this week, and one space traveler caught it all on video.

NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy was quick on the draw when he captured a video of the ‘unidentified object’ near the space station. He spotted the object floating near the space station on Monday (Aug. 19).

“Was it a UFO? Not really,” NASA officials wrote in a video description.

“Russian ground controllers identified it as an antenna cover from the Zvezda service module.”

Researchers Find Brightest Galaxy In The Known Universe 

NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer has found the brightest galaxy in the known universe.

This galaxy, fondly named WISE J224607.57-052635.0, emits over 300 trillion times more light than our sun.

This new discovery is part of a category of celestial objects termed “extremely luminous infrared galaxies”, or ELIRGs.

The main source of the galaxy’s energy output is a supermassive black hole at its center. When a large black hole pulls in surrounding matter, the gravity and friction of the matter orbiting the edge of the event horizon superheats the material, causing it to release energy in the form of light. This kind of black hole, which compresses the matter around it into a luminous disk, is called a quasar.

Although quasars are not rare, the example at the center of WISE J224607.57-052635.0 is unique because of its age relative to the mass of its black hole.

Although the images we see of this quasar and its galaxy are over 12.5 billion years old, it was already sustaining a gravitational pull of billions of times the mass of our sun, even when the universe was only about one tenth of its now 13.8 billion year age.

If I Found This Chained Up Inside A Box It Would Scare The Crap Out Of Me 

While plowing a field, a Bulgarian farmer dug up an old wooden crate that had been chained shut. Inside the crate he found the skull of what appears to be a werewolf.

It was in fact customary to decapitate such a creature back then, but it also meant the farmer could be reborn after death as a werewolf.

 A Bulgarian born farmer, Trayche Draganov, claims to have found a box, chained shut, containing a werewolf-like skull while ploughing a new section of field in the village of Novo Selo, Republic of Macedonia.

The account was reported to Ancient Origins by historian Filip Ganev, who spent time in Novo Selo while conducting research for his book on the Balkan Wars.

Mr Ganev met the farmer, who showed him the box containing the unusual skull. He reported that the skull appears wolf-like with the exception of an enlarged cranium, a trait found only in primate species.

3.3-Million-Year-Old Stone Tools Overturn Archaeological Record, Predate Early Humans 

Our human ancestors may not have been the first to spearhead new technologies millions of years ago. It would seem other hominins were crafting tools 700,000 years before previously thought.

 A paper published this week in the journal Nature announces that the oldest stone tools found to date were crafted by proto-humans, marking “a new beginning to the known archaeological record.”

Lead study author Sonia Harmand of the Turkana Basin Institute at Stony Brook University says that the tools, “shed light on an unexpected and previously unknown period of hominin behavior and can tell us a lot about cognitive development in our ancestors that we can't understand from fossils alone,” according to science news site Phys.org.

The Surprising And Iconic Bronze Age Egtved Girl: Teenage Remains Tell A Story Of Trade And Travel 

One of the best-known Danish Bronze-Age burials, the well preserved Egtved Girl was found in a barrow in 1921. Her woolen clothing, hair, and nails were perfectly preserved, but all her bones were missing.

Scientists studying the ancient teenager’s remains have now made the surprising discovery that the Egtved Girl traveled great distances before her death, and wasn’t from Denmark at all.

A study has been published in the journal Nature detailing the results of modern tests done by scientists. Strontium isotope analysis on Egtved Girl’s molar, hair, and fingernails, combined with examination of her distinctive woolen clothing, have revealed she was born and raised hundreds of miles from her burial site in Egtved, in modern Denmark.

 Findings now show she likely came from The Black Forest of South West Germany, and she traveled between the two locations via ship frequently in the last two years of her life.

Great Salt Lake Of Utah Gives Up Its Prehistoric Gambling Secrets From The 13th Century 

Hundreds of gambling implements, including dice, hoops, carved sticks and other items, have been found in a cave on the shore of the Great Salt Lake, known simply as ‘Cave 1’, according to a report by Science and News website Western Digs.

The items were used in games of skill and chance and archaeologists believe there may be more than 10,000 other implements still to be found. If so, it will be the largest collection of ancient gambling artifacts ever discovered in the western US.

The items, along with artifacts from previous explorations, are currently being studied by archaeologists from the University of Alberta and Brigham Young University.

US Army Creates New “Ballistic Wallpaper” 

In the urban warfare of today, even structures with partial walls and ceilings can become a vital shelter to military personnel. While these buildings can provide a hiding place to treat the wounded or set up communications outposts, they are often civilian structures that have not been built to withstand wartime hazards such as explosives or shrapnel.

In an effort to provide a kind of mobile safe-room for soldiers in urban combat, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers debuted a new piece of technology at the Pentagon’s DOD Lab Day on May 14.

Reinforcing structures to save lives

Nick Boone, a mechanical engineer for the U.S.A.C.E. Engineer Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, Mississippi designed a material that has been dubbed ‘ballistic wallpaper’. This thin, durable composite is an adhesive-backed sheet of polymer-laminated kevlar fibers that can be unrolled and used to cover walls that would otherwise shatter under fire.

Researchers Create Human-Yeast Hybrid To Study Genetics 

Biologists at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a new type of yeast that is part fungus and part human, demonstrating that two types of lifeforms separated by over a billion years of evolution still have hundreds of genes in common.

According to Discovery News, those genes are remnants of the last common ancestor between people and fungi – DNA which is virtually unchanged and remained surprising stable during the course of evolution. By creating partially-human yeast, the team may have found a way to better understand genetic disorders and to evaluate potential new treatments for these conditions.

“Cells use a common set of parts and those parts, even after a billion years of independent evolution, are swappable,” said Edward Marcotte, a professor in the UT-Austin Department of Molecular Biosciences and co-director of the Center for Systems and Synthetic Biology. “It’s a beautiful demonstration of the common heritage of all living things.”

Does Non-Water-Based Life Exist? 

Much of the search for extraterrestrial life on Mars and in other parts of the universe has thus far centered around the hunt for water – mostly because all life as we know it needs water to live. But what if we’re ignoring other types of life?

That fascinating possibility is examined by the authors of a study published in a recent edition of the journal Astrobiology, who according to Space.com examine whether a liquid other than good old-fashioned H2O could support life in a place such as Saturn’s icy moon Titan.

Titan, they explained, is rich in the hydrocarbon methane, which would keep water-based RNA and DNA molecules from carrying a genetic blueprint. Other molecules would have to step up and fill this role. The study proposes ethers, a type of molecule not used in any Earth-based genetics, could support alien life.

UFO Crash In Bolivia Witnessed By Thousands Of People 

On May 6, 1978, at about 4:15 p.m., something crashed into a mountain near El Taire on the Bermejo River, the border between the Bolivian province of Tarija and Argentina.

Thousands of people saw this happening and later described the object as being cylindrical in shape with a flaming tail.

It had caused a supersonic bang that was heard up to 150 miles away and that cracked windowpanes as far away as 30 miles in every direction. The next day, the papers were speculating on what had come down in that godforsaken place. The explanations ranged from meteorites to UFOs and belated reentry of some Apollo capsule. All of them referred to statements of eye witnesses.

Then it was announced that the Argentinian authorities had sent the 20th unit of the border police to the area in question to look for wreckage on their side of the border. The search in that mountainous country could last for weeks, so swarms of reporters went to the nearest big town, Aguas Blancas, to take up quarters there and await further developments, as well as to interview eyewitnesses in the town.

And in fact, there were a number of witnesses who claimed to have seen the object. Most of them described it as oval or cylindrical and metallic.

Discovery Of Ancient Indian Daggers May Push Back Start Of Iron Age By Hundreds Of Years 

Indian archaeologists say recent dagger discoveries at ancient sites in Hyderabad have pushed the Iron Age in India back to at least 2200 BC—around 1,000 years before the rest of the world. Indian scholars had previously estimated an earlier date for India’s Iron Age than other parts of the world by about 600 years.

The Times of India reports that archaeologists at the University of Hyderabad campus have found small blades and knives that they dated to between 2400 and 1800 BC. They were excavated next to earthen pots, most of which were mangled. About 10 of the pots were in good enough condition for archaeologists to learn somewhat about the art of that time and place.

Elfdalian, The Ancient Viking Forest Language Of Sweden, Set To Be Revived 

The ancient Viking language of Elfdalian has been almost entirely wiped out, with only 2,500 people in a tiny forest community in Sweden currently keeping it alive.

 Now people fight to revive the historic tongue by bringing it back to schools before it vanishes completely.

The Conversation reports that the ancient dialect of Elfdalian (älvdalska in Swedish and övdalsk in the language itself) was a vigorous language until well into the 20th century.

Sounding to listeners like a beautiful and complex language as spoken by the Elven race in fantasy epics, Elfdalian is actually derived from Old Norse, the language of the Vikings.

However, it is radically different from Swedish, writes University of Copenhagen linguist Dr. Guus Kroonen.

He explains that it “sounds like something you would more likely encounter in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings rather than in a remote Swedish forest.”

Planetary Mystery: Eerie Trumpet Sounds From The Sky Heard All Over The World 

What have been described as eerie loud trumpet noises coming from the sky have been witnessed all over the world, and no one really knows for sure what they are or why they are happening.

In the clip, shot last month, a young child can be seen frozen with fear after the strange sound boomed from the sky.

Some people call it sinister, evil. One man from Montana complained he has had vivid, awful nightmares since he witnessed it with his daughter.

Mystery: Why Do Thunderstorms Form At Night 

From June 1 through July 15, researchers from across North America will fan out each evening across the Great Plains, where storms are more common at night than during the day.

The effort, co-organized by numerous collaborating institutions, will use lab-equipped aircraft, ground-based instruments, and weather balloons to better understand the atmospheric conditions that lead to storm formation and evolution after sunset.

What the scientists find may ultimately help improve forecasts of these sometimes damaging storms.

The Plains Elevated Convection at Night (PECAN) field campaign will involve scientists, students and support staff from eight research laboratories and 14 universities.

The $13.5 million project is largely funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), which contributed $10.6 million. Additional support is provided by NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Building A Supermassive Black Hole 

This month at the Science Club Nashville, we were privy to Dr. Jillian Bellovary, a Bridge Postdoctoral Fellow at Vanderbilt University’s Physics & Astronomy Department.

L’Oreal To 3D Print Skin 

People can do some pretty wild things with 3D printers, like printing faces using DNA samples found on the streets and making Star Wars-inspired prosthetic limbs for kids from open-source designs and some plastic.

Now, 3D printing will soon be able to generate real, living human tissue, as L’Oreal has partnered with bioengineering startup Organovo to print human skin.

The French cosmetics firm has been growing skin in a lab since the 1980’s, breaking down bits of donor skin from plastic surgeries into individual cells, re-culturing them, and growing them into tiny, half-centimeter testing sheets. This has been successful, with L’Oreal ceasing animal testing in 2013 as a result.

Early Snakes Were Nocturnal, Had Tiny Hindlimbs 

An in-depth analysis of fossils, genes, and the anatomy of 73 different species of snakes and lizards has discovered that slithering serpents first evolved on land, not in the sea, and were actually nocturnal predators that had tiny hindlimbs, complete with ankles and toes.

The analysis, conducted by a team led by Yale University researchers and detailed in a paper published Wednesday in the journal BMC Evolutionary Biology, concluded that the creatures most likely emerged from the warm, forested ecosystems of the Southern Hemisphere around 128 million years ago, helping settle a longstanding debate about their origins.

While snakes are incredibly diverse, with more than 3,400 species currently living in an array of different types of habitats, the secrets of their evolution and the appearance of their ancestors had long remained a mystery, lead author Allison Hsiang, a postgraduate associate in the university’s department of geology and geophysics, explained in a statement.

Eternal Flames: Geologists Investigate Ancient Myths To Know More About Modern Fuel 

Millennia ago, ancient cultures were astounded by the seeming miracle of natural flames which burned day and night for weeks, decades, or even centuries.

The tales of such flames have become a focus of interest for geologists and oil and gas explorers, as the flames not only reveal the spiritual and cultural rituals of the past, but can also give clues in modern geology and current gas seepage.

According to science news website Phys.org, Guiseppe Etiope of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy writes in his new book, “Natural Gas Seepage” that studying legends of historical eternal flames can reveal to researchers locations and durations of gas seepage fires observed in the ancient past.

Knowing certain fires burned and for how long can help determine which ones have not been caused by modern human activity, such as fracking or drilling.
