What killed Señora of Cao in Peru 1,600 years ago may still remain a mystery, however we now have a very clear depiction of what she looked like alive.
No one knows what fatal fate of Señora of Cao nearly 1,600 years ago.
Whatever the cause of her demise, her untimely passing must have been upsetting to her people, the Moche, who lived on the north coast of Peru between approximately and 100 and 700 C.E., at least seven centuries before the more well-known Inca.

Humans Have Become Super-Predators – No On Else Comes Close


Though humans might not be as fierce as a lion or white shark, we’re definitely the greatest predatory species in the world, ever. 

The extent of humanity’s super-predation was assessed by a team at University of Victoria in British Columbia which compared our hunting abilities to those of both land and marine predators in all the oceans and continents, besides Antarctica.

The findings reveal humans lack any real competition preying on adults of other species at rates up to 14 times higher than other predators, especially marine ones.

Scientists Can't Believe Their Eyes As They Lower A Camera In A Underwater Volcano (Video)







In the search for answers about underwater volcanoes, a team of scientists recently positioned a camera in an underwater volcano off the Solomon Islands made an unanticipated discovery when they reviewed the footage.

“You never know what you’re going to find. Especially when you are working deep underwater. The deeper you go, the stranger it gets,” ocean engineer Brennan Phillips said in a statement.

Hubble View Of A Nitrogen-Rich Nebula







This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image shows a planetary nebula named NGC 6153, located about 4,000 light-years away in the southern constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion).

The faint blue haze across the frame shows what remains of a star like the sun after it has depleted most of its fuel.

When this happens, the outer layers of the star are ejected, and get excited and ionized by the energetic ultraviolet light emitted by the bright hot core of the star, forming the nebula.

NGC 6153 is a planetary nebula that is elliptical in shape, with an extremely rich network of loops and filaments, shown clearly in this Hubble image.

However, this is not what makes this planetary nebula so interesting for astronomers.

Measurements show that NGC 6153 contains large amounts of neon, argon, oxygen, carbon and chlorine — up to three times more than can be found in the solar system.

The nebula contains a whopping five times more nitrogen than our sun!

Although it may be that the star developed higher levels of these elements as it grew and evolved, it is more likely that the star originally formed from a cloud of material that already contained a lot more of these elements.

Longhorned Beetles Use Timing To Find Mates 




For us humans, meeting that special someone often comes down to timing, and it turns out – the same goes for longhorned beetle.

According to a new study published in the Journal of Chemical Ecology, male longhorned beetles from various species time the release of their mating pheromones at different times during the day or year to minimize sending mixed signals to female beetles.

“We found that beetles that produce the same pheromone are active at different times of day — and that beetles that are active at the same time of day produce different pheromones,” study author Robert F. Mitchell, an insect researcher at the University of Arizona, said in a press release.

Smell is an under appreciated sense in people — but when you talk about insects, many ‘see’ their world in chemicals,” Mitchell added. “The most common thing they say with pheromones is, ‘I’m looking for a mate.’”

Wolf Spiders ‘Sing’ To Win The Hearts Of Mates 




Spiders might not be thought of as musical creatures, but a new study from the University of Cincinnati could change that.

Being presented this week at the annual meeting of the Acoustical Society of America, the new study revealed that male wolf spiders use their legs to generate a purring sound when trying to woo a female.

The study team said their work offers clues to how animals evolved to use sound as a means of communication. The researchers said they started their work based on knowledge that wolf spiders, and many other spiders, have sensory organs in their legs that they use to detect vibrations caused by the movement of prey and predators.

“I decided I wanted to find out whether this species was using airborne sound to communicate,” study team member Alexander Sweger told BBC News.

'Mind Control’ Prosthetic Allows For Smooth Movement 




Erik G. Sorto was paralyzed from the neck down due to a gunshot wound when he was 21.

 However, he has become the first person in the world to have a neural prosthetic device implanted in the part of the brain where intentions are made.

With clinical collaboration of Caltech, Keck Medicine of USC, and Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, Sorto has been able to move a robotic arm just by thinking and using his imagination. He has been able to perform handshakes, drink a beverage, and even play “rock, paper, scissors,” using this arm, according to the study.

In the past, neural prosthetic devices were implanted in the brain’s movement center, the motor cortex, which allowed patients with paralysis to control robotic limbs. However, the movements were jerky and not natural. Caltech researchers hoped to find a way to make the movement of neuroprosthetics smooth and humanlike.

Led by principal investigator Richard Andersen, neurosurgeon Charles Y. Lui, professor of neurological surgery, neurology, and biomedical engineering at USC, and neurologist Mindy Aisen, chief medical officer at Ranchos Los Amigos, the clinical trial attempted to connect the implant device in the part of the brain that controlled the intentions to move rather than the movement directly.

Who Pulled The Plug On Lake Mead? Earthquake Draining Lake Mead?  




Friday morning,May 4th, Las Vegas was rattled by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake and caused roads and bridges to be closed.

The quake seem to only appear in the local papers in Vegas, and was treated as irreverent by the mainstream media, however a new development has taken a puzzling turn.

In the 36 hours that’s passed since the tremors, Lake Mead has had a dramatic drop in its water levels.

As reported by Kimber Laux And Cassandra Taloma of the Las Vegas Journal:  A 4.8 magnitude earthquake shook Las Vegas and surrounding areas Friday morning, forcing loose a rubber casing on a bridge and leading state officials to close Spaghetti Bowl interchanges for several hours.

Aboriginal Languages Could Reveal Scientific Clues To Australia’s Unique Past 




The loss of Australian aboriginal languages could obstruct access to unique scientific information regarding Australia’s ancient geological history, according to a story reported this week by BBC News.

Ancient Australian aboriginal legends passed down over millennia appear to verify recent scientific discoveries regarding Australia’s ancient past. For example, cave art suggests an ancient knowledge of the heavens including beliefs in visits by ancient astronauts and a previously untapped record of natural history among the stars.

Investigation of such a resource could reveal memories of ancient meteor strikes from thousands of years ago according to research by the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

US Army Creates New “Ballistic Wallpaper” 




In the urban warfare of today, even structures with partial walls and ceilings can become a vital shelter to military personnel. While these buildings can provide a hiding place to treat the wounded or set up communications outposts, they are often civilian structures that have not been built to withstand wartime hazards such as explosives or shrapnel.

In an effort to provide a kind of mobile safe-room for soldiers in urban combat, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers debuted a new piece of technology at the Pentagon’s DOD Lab Day on May 14.

Reinforcing structures to save lives

Nick Boone, a mechanical engineer for the U.S.A.C.E. Engineer Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, Mississippi designed a material that has been dubbed ‘ballistic wallpaper’. This thin, durable composite is an adhesive-backed sheet of polymer-laminated kevlar fibers that can be unrolled and used to cover walls that would otherwise shatter under fire.

Researchers Create Human-Yeast Hybrid To Study Genetics 




Biologists at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a new type of yeast that is part fungus and part human, demonstrating that two types of lifeforms separated by over a billion years of evolution still have hundreds of genes in common.

According to Discovery News, those genes are remnants of the last common ancestor between people and fungi – DNA which is virtually unchanged and remained surprising stable during the course of evolution. By creating partially-human yeast, the team may have found a way to better understand genetic disorders and to evaluate potential new treatments for these conditions.

“Cells use a common set of parts and those parts, even after a billion years of independent evolution, are swappable,” said Edward Marcotte, a professor in the UT-Austin Department of Molecular Biosciences and co-director of the Center for Systems and Synthetic Biology. “It’s a beautiful demonstration of the common heritage of all living things.”

Mystery: Why Do Thunderstorms Form At Night 




From June 1 through July 15, researchers from across North America will fan out each evening across the Great Plains, where storms are more common at night than during the day.

The effort, co-organized by numerous collaborating institutions, will use lab-equipped aircraft, ground-based instruments, and weather balloons to better understand the atmospheric conditions that lead to storm formation and evolution after sunset.

What the scientists find may ultimately help improve forecasts of these sometimes damaging storms.

The Plains Elevated Convection at Night (PECAN) field campaign will involve scientists, students and support staff from eight research laboratories and 14 universities.

The $13.5 million project is largely funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), which contributed $10.6 million. Additional support is provided by NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the U.S. Department of Energy.

L’Oreal To 3D Print Skin 





People can do some pretty wild things with 3D printers, like printing faces using DNA samples found on the streets and making Star Wars-inspired prosthetic limbs for kids from open-source designs and some plastic.

Now, 3D printing will soon be able to generate real, living human tissue, as L’Oreal has partnered with bioengineering startup Organovo to print human skin.

The French cosmetics firm has been growing skin in a lab since the 1980’s, breaking down bits of donor skin from plastic surgeries into individual cells, re-culturing them, and growing them into tiny, half-centimeter testing sheets. This has been successful, with L’Oreal ceasing animal testing in 2013 as a result.

Early Snakes Were Nocturnal, Had Tiny Hindlimbs 




An in-depth analysis of fossils, genes, and the anatomy of 73 different species of snakes and lizards has discovered that slithering serpents first evolved on land, not in the sea, and were actually nocturnal predators that had tiny hindlimbs, complete with ankles and toes.

The analysis, conducted by a team led by Yale University researchers and detailed in a paper published Wednesday in the journal BMC Evolutionary Biology, concluded that the creatures most likely emerged from the warm, forested ecosystems of the Southern Hemisphere around 128 million years ago, helping settle a longstanding debate about their origins.

While snakes are incredibly diverse, with more than 3,400 species currently living in an array of different types of habitats, the secrets of their evolution and the appearance of their ancestors had long remained a mystery, lead author Allison Hsiang, a postgraduate associate in the university’s department of geology and geophysics, explained in a statement.

Eternal Flames: Geologists Investigate Ancient Myths To Know More About Modern Fuel 




Millennia ago, ancient cultures were astounded by the seeming miracle of natural flames which burned day and night for weeks, decades, or even centuries.

The tales of such flames have become a focus of interest for geologists and oil and gas explorers, as the flames not only reveal the spiritual and cultural rituals of the past, but can also give clues in modern geology and current gas seepage.

According to science news website Phys.org, Guiseppe Etiope of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy writes in his new book, “Natural Gas Seepage” that studying legends of historical eternal flames can reveal to researchers locations and durations of gas seepage fires observed in the ancient past.

Knowing certain fires burned and for how long can help determine which ones have not been caused by modern human activity, such as fracking or drilling.

Panda Gut Bacteria Can’t Digest Bamboo 





Think of a giant panda and you’ll probably think of a big bear rolling around in a Chinese forest munching on bamboo all day.

But there’s actually a really good reason why giant pandas always seen to be chewing on bamboo: According to a new study, symbiotic bacteria in the giant panda’s gut is not very effective at breaking down the fibrous plant.

Published in the journal mBio, the new study examined the “carnivore-like” bacteria in the panda’s gut, particularly Escherichia/Shigella and Streptococcus.

“Unlike other plant-eating animals that have successfully evolved anatomically specialized digestive systems to efficiently deconstruct fibrous plant matter, the giant panda still retains a gastrointestinal tract typical of carnivores,” study author Zhihe Zhang, director of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China, said in a press release. “The animals also do not have the genes for plant-digesting enzymes in their own genome. This combined scenario may have increased their risk for extinction.”

The Hoverbike Is Coming In 2017 




For those who spent their childhood wishing for a Star Wars land speeder, start saving up. With less than two years from the projected 2017 release date for the Aerofex hoverbike, the chance to tear across vast, open landscapes mere feet above the ground is closer than ever.

Despite is sci-fi looks, the Aero-X isn’t held aloft by antigravity technology. The vehicle’s downward thrust is generated by a normally-aspirated rotary engine which turns two fixed-pitch, carbon fiber ducted fans. The primary frame and structural components of the craft are made of lightweight carbon fiber.

The Aero-X carries two people up to 12 feet above the ground at a top speed of 45 mph. At 14.8 feet long and 6.8 feet wide, it can easily be transported via trailer to the desired environment for hovercraft flight. Aerofex also offers optional whole-vehicle airbags as well as flotation pontoons for water landings.

How Burmese Pythons Grow And Shrink After Eating 





The changes that occur to the anatomy and physiology of a Burmese python is controlled by a series of alterations in gene expression, scientists from the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Colorado, and the University of Alabama report in a new study.

Their research, published earlier this month in the journal Physiological Genomics, analyzed the changes that occur to the snake species in the days after it first ingests a meal, and as the authors wrote, their work could shed new light on how vertebrates control organ growth and function.

Even though the Burmese python’s has a distinct body shape when compared to other vertebrates (including humans), its organs function in much the same way. As a result, findings from snakes can be adapted to better understand how the human body works, and might lead to the discovery of new ways to treat a variety of diseases, the authors explained in a statement.

It’s well known that accents can make people more attractive, and different people have different preferences for which accents make them go all tingly.

But preference depends not only on where the accent is from, but where we’re from, too. We are predisposed towards liking certain accents.

Accent appeal goes beyond exotic curiosity and is based, like many of the deep-rooted causes of attractiveness, in perceived advantages. These perceptions are ingrained in history and in cultural traditions.

For example, people in the U.S. tend to associate the British accent with high social status, a throwback to the colonial past, writes Glamour’s Max Kutner. Status has always had value in the search for a romantic partner.

Distinct Whale ‘Voices’ Identified By Researchers 




There are certain people who can be easily identified by their voices. For instance, if you close your eyes and listen, you can undoubtedly tell when someone like James Earl Jones or Morgan Freeman are speaking–simply by the tone and timbre of the sounds they produce.

Now, a team of researchers from Syracuse University have found that the same is true of North Atlantic right whales, as they have managed to correctly distinguish between 13 different whales in an initial study by using a combination of different characteristics, including the fundamental and harmonic frequencies they produced and the length of their calls.

In a statement, the scientists explained their research could allow them to identify and to track individual right whales, which could make it easier to study this elusive endangered species. The team will present their findings at this week’s spring meeting of the Acoustical Society of America.
