Why Do We Find Other Accents Attractive? 




It’s well known that accents can make people more attractive, and different people have different preferences for which accents make them go all tingly.

But preference depends not only on where the accent is from, but where we’re from, too. We are predisposed towards liking certain accents.

Accent appeal goes beyond exotic curiosity and is based, like many of the deep-rooted causes of attractiveness, in perceived advantages. These perceptions are ingrained in history and in cultural traditions.

For example, people in the U.S. tend to associate the British accent with high social status, a throwback to the colonial past, writes Glamour’s Max Kutner. Status has always had value in the search for a romantic partner.
