Hubble View Of A Nitrogen-Rich Nebula

This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image shows a planetary nebula named NGC 6153, located about 4,000 light-years away in the southern constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion).

The faint blue haze across the frame shows what remains of a star like the sun after it has depleted most of its fuel.

When this happens, the outer layers of the star are ejected, and get excited and ionized by the energetic ultraviolet light emitted by the bright hot core of the star, forming the nebula.

NGC 6153 is a planetary nebula that is elliptical in shape, with an extremely rich network of loops and filaments, shown clearly in this Hubble image.

However, this is not what makes this planetary nebula so interesting for astronomers.

Measurements show that NGC 6153 contains large amounts of neon, argon, oxygen, carbon and chlorine — up to three times more than can be found in the solar system.

The nebula contains a whopping five times more nitrogen than our sun!

Although it may be that the star developed higher levels of these elements as it grew and evolved, it is more likely that the star originally formed from a cloud of material that already contained a lot more of these elements.

Ancient Antikythera Shipwreck Has More Secrets To Reveal

Researchers are carrying out a new five-year study of the ancient Greek shipwreck off Antikythera Island that had onboard the famous Antikythera mechanism, hailed as the world's first computing device, as well as other treasures.

A recent analysis of the wreck identified two areas with artifacts and ship remnants, leading archaeologists to believe that there may have been another ship that went down simultaneously. Alternatively, the two areas of remnants may be separate parts of the Antikythera wreck after it split in two.

Greek officials approved the extension of studies of the ancient vessel, which may have been 50 meters (164 feet) long. Researchers are expecting to find more treasures from the ship, which is located at the bottom of  the Aegean Sea, in the south of Greece.

This time they will focus on areas where they've found metal objects and pottery in the past.

“The evidence shows this is the largest ancient shipwreck ever discovered,” Brendan Foley of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute has said. “It's the Titanic of the ancient world.”

Oldest Wooden Statue In The World: The 10,000-Year-Old Shigir Idol

The Shigir Idol is considered to be one of the most important and mysterious pieces of pre-historic art from ancient Europe.

The ancient wooden carving, which today sits in a museum in Russia, has been dated at nearly 10,000 years old, making it 4,000 to 5,000 years older than Britain’s famous Stonehenge monument and twice as old as the Egyptian pyramids.

Not only is it the oldest wooden statue in the world, but standing as tall as a two-story building, it is also the highest wooden statue from the ancient world.

Covered with strange markings and geometric symbols, some researchers believe this carving contains coded information about the creation of the world left behind by man from the Mesolithic era.

Discovery of the Shigir Idol

The Shigir Idol was discovered in January 1890 in the Sverdlovsk region, in the western fringes of Siberia, Russia.

It was preserved, as if in a time capsule, about 4 meters (13.5 feet) below the surface, and protected through the millennia by a layer of peat bog on the site of an open air gold mine.

Its survival was due to the anti-bacterial effects of the peat, which prevented it from rotting.

Artist Gives Old Apple iMacs New Lease On Life By Turning Them Into Aquariums

Jake Harms is an expert at converting old Apple iMacs into beautiful aquariums.

He spends hours locked up in his basement workshop, giving these old computers a new lease of life.

So far, he’s sold over 1,000 aquariums to customers all over the world.

Jake said that he specifically uses 2000-era Apple iMac G3 computers, because of their distinct shape and bright color schemes.

The opaque computer frames allow light to shine through them, so that the fish are visible from various angles.

He uses iMacs because they’re a lot better looking than the beige and grey models of other brands.

“No one’s ever asked me to make an aquarium out of a Dell,” he joked.

The 6 Alien Species Currently Fighting For Control Over Earth

Hundreds of sightings, abductions and first-hand accounts have made it possible to distinguish several distinct alien species that have been in cahoots with military forces, deciding our future without ever consulting us.

Below are the least obscure ones we could find.

U.S. President Ronald Reagan Asked Mikhail Gorbachev To Team Up To Battle Alien Invasion" (Video)

Many people regard Ronald Reagan as one of the greatest presidents in US history.

 A man’s man among presidents.

His insight into the future and the paranormal was obsolete among his peers, during his time as president. In a stunning revelation it has come to light that President Reagan appealed to the leader of the Russia, then Mikhail Gorbachev to join forces against a possible alien invasion.

Did Reagan know something the rest of us didn’t at the time?

Was the world in peril facing this possible threat? It is not a secret that sensationalist journalism has talked about Ronald Reagan’s fascination with astrology and extraterrestrial life for a long time, even though mainstream media never gave the subject much importance, the truth is that Ronald Wilson Reagan became the first president of the United States to speak publicly about the possibility of an alien invasion.

'Bashful' Black Hole in Neighboring Galaxy Revealed

Thanks to the extraordinary sensitivity of the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), astronomers have detected what they believe is the long-sought radio emission coming from a supermassive black hole at the center of one of our closest neighboring galaxies.

Evidence for the black hole’s existence previously came only from studies of stellar motions in the galaxy and from X-ray observations.

The galaxy, called Messier 32 (M32), is a satellite of the Andromeda Galaxy, our own Milky Way’s giant neighbor. Unlike the Milky Way and Andromeda, which are star-forming spiral galaxies, M32 is an elliptical galaxy, with little star formation. About 2.5 million light-years from Earth, M32 is much smaller than either the Milky Way or Andromeda.

The galaxy M32 is a small satellite of the larger, spiral Andromeda Galaxy (M31), as shown in this Hubble Space Telescope image. The inset is a combined radio/optical/X-ray image of M32. The diffuse purple is the visible starlight of M32.

The central white object in the inset is the center of M32, where there is both radio and X-ray emission. Red shows radio-emitting objects, including a pair of presumed planetary nebulae (left center), and the green is an object strongly emitting X-rays.
