When Less is More: I’m sure you have all heard that old saying. Here at Your Radiation This Week, it means that the radiation pronouncements from the people that make up those news releases are insanely Wrong. The idea promoted is that radiation from a given nuclear event gradually decreases over a period of time. That makes sense to most people and, in fact, it is actually true.
The tricky part is that radiation and “Lethality” are separate values and they can move in opposite directions at any given moment. When calculating just how deadly a radioactive event was, and is now, one of the most important data points is exactly how long the core has been “burning” and at what rate. As in: “Did the nuclear core “burn” for three days, three years, or thirty years, for example?” Yes, it makes a difference, and it relates to what the reactor actually does.
