Does Diet Shape The Skull? 

Determining if a prehistoric creature was a carnivore or a plant-eater isn’t as easy as comparing its skull shape and tooth patterns to modern animals with similar features, researchers from the American Museum of Natural History explain in a new PLOS One study.

Rather, using models and tests on living species, John J. Flynn, the Museum’s Frick Curator of Fossil Mammals, and his colleagues found that there is a complex link between animal diets and skull biomechanics, and that a creature’s ancestry plays a larger-than-expected role.

“Traditionally, when we looked at a fossilized skull with pointy piercing teeth and sharp slicing blades, we assumed that it was primarily a meat eater, but that simplistic line of thinking doesn’t always hold true,” he said in a statement. “We’ve found that diet can be linked to a number of factors – skull size, biomechanical attributes, and often, most importantly, the species’ position in the tree of life.”

Scottish Beavers Are Thriving; But Will They Stay? 

They disappeared from Scotland around 400 years ago, hunted to extinction. But Scottish beavers are now back and thriving.

It’s still a tenuous existence, though. The government will decide the fate of the big rodents at the end of this year. According to new reports, it’s “so far, so good” for them. The beavers seem to be sending out a message saying “Look, we like it here; we’re being good; we are squeaky clean; and, hey, we’re not American, we are German.”

Reports published by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) on behalf of the Tayside Beaver Study Group (TBSG) found that around 150 beavers living in the River Tay and Earn catchments are adapting well to Scottish life. They are free of diseases and parasites which might affect humans, domestic animals, and other wildlife. They are successfully producing young and still spreading.

The reports looked at the effect on other land users and at the various techniques for managing the beavers’ impact.

Nepal Quake Moves Kathmandu 10 Feet 

The 7.8 earthquake that devastated the city of Kathmandu, Nepal and killed thousands has moved the city 10 feet to the south, according to geologists.  Ten feet may sound dramatic, but for an earthquake of this magnitude this short of shift over the fault is typical, they explain.   Many fault-zones slip and move the areas from which was over them many feet away.

The ancient Himalayan fault line under the city shifted the tectonic plate 10 feet to the south, bringing with it a shockwave with the strength of more than 20 thermonuclear weapons.

New Dig At First Emperor Mausoleum Expected To Yield Up To 1400 More Terracotta Warriors 

Chinese archaeologists have just launched an exciting new excavation project in a burial pit at the world famous tomb of the First Emperor of China in Xi’an.  Previous excavations revealed that the pit contains as many as 1,400 clay warriors and horses and more than 80 chariots, but lack of protective technologies had halted the dig back in 2008. Despite more than 40 years of research, the great Mausoleum has many more treasures waiting to be unearthed.

China.org.cn reports that the excavation will take place in Pit No. 2, a 200 square meter site that is already known to contain an enormous collection of terracotta chariots, cavalry, and archers.

“You can find all the kneeling archers, soldiers and cavalry in the No.2 pit,” said Archaeologist Yuan Zhongyi. “Their colorful paint is also relatively well preserved.”

So…Pluto May Have A Polar Ice Cap 

New images captured by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft have revealed a bright feature near the visible pole of the dwarf planet Pluto – a feature that could be a polar cap made of frozen molecular nitrogen ice, officials from the US space agency announced on Wednesday.

The feature, one of several dark and bright spots captured using New Horizons’ telescopic Long-Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) camera earlier this month, appears to be brighter than its surroundings, leading scientists to believe it may be caused by a “cap” of highly reflective snow.

The images were captured from a distance of less than 70 million miles (113 million kilometers) during the early and middle parts of the month, and the polar cap hypothesis will be confirmed or disproven when the spacecraft completes a close flyby of Pluto in July, NASA said.

Scientists In India To Test DNA Of Ancient Skeletons To Determine If They Are Ahom Royals 

Scientists in India will compare DNA from the bones of six 700-year-old skeletons to the DNA of living descendants of the Ahom royals to see if the old bones belong to the ancestors of the Ahom royal family or to looters who died while plundering the tombs at the famous Charaideo Maidam site in Assam, the burial site of kings and queens of the Ahom kingdom.

“The purpose of the comparison is to find out if the skeletal remains belong to a king or to plunderers as for centuries, the mounds of Charaideo were plundered. The DNA analysis will reveal the truth,” said Madhujyor Rajkonwar, a member of the royal family.

“Earlier, we believed there were five individuals, but now, it is clear that six individuals were buried. The bones were kept at the ASI’s office in Sivasagar .The DNA results will take time as it is important to know whether the remains belong to members of the royal family,” said Veena Mushrif Tripathi, assistant professor at Deccan College Post Graduate and Research Institute.

Lakes, Signs Of Life Discovered Under Antarctica’s Dry Valleys 

Antarctica may not be the frozen wasteland many people imagine. Helicopters carrying a novel airborn electromagnetic mapping sensor system, known as SkyTEM, have discovered hidden interconnected lakes beneath its dry valleys. This is the first time SkyTEM, developed at the University of Aarhus in Denmark, has been deployed in Antarctica.

The scientists behind the project believe the valleys could sustain life and help us understand more about ancient climate change.

Jill Mikucki, a, microbiology assistant professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, was part of the team that detected extensive salty groundwater networks.

The research was funded by the National Science Foundation and provides compelling evidence that the underground lakes and brine-saturated sediments may support subsurface microbial ecosystems. The findings helped the team understand glacial dynamics and also revealed how Antarctica has responded to climate change over time.

Sombrero Galaxy To Be Visible Friday Night 

Astronomy enthusiasts have a golden opportunity to see what National Geographic refers to as a “stunning galaxy” on Friday night, as Messier 104 – better known as the Sombrero Galaxy – will be visible in the southern part of the sky, according to the website.

Messier 104 is “is a dramatic-looking telescope object with a distinctive dark dust lane that cuts right across its bright core, giving it a strong resemblance to its namesake,” they added. It is one of the brightest and most famous galaxies that can be seen using household telescopes.

Stargazers can track down the galaxy by mentally drawing a line from the moon to Gienah, a bright star that is located 165 light-years away in the constellation Corvus, Nat Geo said. Then, using either a good set of binoculars or a small backyard telescope, scan to the midpoint of this line in search of “a faint, fuzzy oval patch.” That object will be Messier 104.

Meet T. Rex’s Vegetarian Cousin: Chilesaurus 

Therapods, a group of dinosaurs that include the likes of Tyrannosaurs and Velociraptors, are typically viewed as ferocious predators, but a team of researchers has reportedly discovered the vegetarian cousin of these vicious meat-eaters at a site in southern Chile.

Fernando Novas of the Argentinian Museum of Natural Sciences and his colleagues reported the discovery in Monday’s edition of the journal Nature, explaining that the bizarre, enigmatic lizard lived during the Late Jurassic period and telling National Geographic that it looked like a strange mash-up of therapods, saurpods, ornithischians, and basal crocodyliforms.

The creature was named Chilesaurus diegosuarezi in honor of the son of the geologist who first discovered the bones, and Novas told Nat Geo that his team initially believed it was just a typical Jurassic-era dinosaur. They soon discovered that the specimen was anything but typical.

Officials Have ‘Lost Control’ Of Russian Spacecraft 

Officials have ‘lost control’ of a Russian spacecraft on its way to deliver supplies to the International Space Station.

Said to be spinning out of control high above the Earth by Russian media, the Progress M-27M craft is now expected to fall out of orbit and burn up upon re-entry into the atmosphere.

A spokesperson told Russia’s Interfax news agency that an inability to contact the craft means that docking with the ISS is now out of the question.

“The possibility of the craft linking up with the ISS is now not worth it,” the source said. “The main thing now is to ensure its controlled and safe de-orbiting.”

Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower Visible Next Two Weeks 

Hot on the heels of last week’s peak viewing conditions for the Lyrid meteor shower comes the Eta Aquarids, which will become visible this week before peaking on Tuesday, May 6.

The Eta Aquarids are viewable in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres during pre-dawn hours, according to NASA, though the view is typically better in the South. National Geographic noted that stargazers should be able to see between five and 10 shooting stars per hour before the sun rises if they view from a dark location during its peak next week.

When viewing the Eta Aquarids, NASA recommends finding an area located far away from any artificial lights, and to bring a blanket, lawn chair or sleeping bag. Enthusiasts should lie on their backs with their feet facing east and look up, making certain to keep their eyes on as much of the sky as possible. After 30 minutes or so, their eyes will adapt and meteors will become visible.

Source Of Antarctica’s Eerie ‘Bleeding Glacier’ Found 

Antarctica’s Dry Valleys are the most arid places on Earth, but underneath their icy soils lies a vast and ancient network of salty, liquid water filled with life, a new study finds.

The Dry Valleys are almost entirely ice-free, except for a few isolated glaciers. The only surface water is a handful of small lakes. Inside the canyons, the climate is extremely dry, cold and windy; researchers have stumbled upon mummified seals in these gorges that are thousands of years old.

Yet there is life in this extreme landscape. For instance, bacteria living under Taylor Glacier stain its snout a deep blood red. The rust-colored brine, called Blood Falls, pours into Lake Bonney in the southernmost of the three largest Dry Valleys. The dramatic colors offer shocking relief to senses overwhelmed by the glaring white ice and dull brown rocks.

FBI Destroyed Thousands Of UFO Reports, 1949 Memo Reveals 

The FBI was so overwhelmed with sightings of flying saucers in the 1940s that agents routinely destroyed reports because of lack of filing space, according to documents released by the organisation.

The policy is outlined in a memo sent on 16 August 1949 to J Edgar Hoover, the director of the bureau, along with documents on UFOs compiled by agents after statements from witnesses.

The note, sent by an unnamed FBI agent in San Antonio, Texas, states that the office destroyed UFO reports on the grounds that they arrived “in great numbers” and contained “nothing of FBI interest”.

“It is pointed out that the filing of these would result in the rapid accumulation of very bulky files,” the memo continues.

Paleolithic Europeans Didn’t Settle America First, Study Says 

Many archeologists subscribe to the theory that North America was first populated by humans coming across a land bridge connecting modern day Alaska and Russia.

However, a conflicting theory touted in the ’90s claimed that Paleolithic Europeans crossing a Greenland ice bridge settled North America much earlier.

Based on the discovery of a stone tool, that less popular theory is largely being refuted by a new study recently published in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports.

The new study refutes the very basis for the alternative theory, the discovery of an ancient stone blade with pieces of a mastodon skeleton at the bottom of Chesapeake Bay in the early 1970s. The discovery was made when a scallop-trawling vessel called the Cinmar hit a snag off the coast of Virginia.

Faced with the impossibility of travelling faster than the speed of light, what’s a science fiction writer to do? The easiest solution is to ignore the problem entirely. The world of science fiction is full of “warp drives,” “hyperdrives,” travel through “subspace,” and their relatives — the writer simply assumes that someone, sometime, will figure out a way to circumvent the cosmic speed limit.

Science fiction is full of such ideas: Breezy violations of various laws of physics that just too darned inconvenient to obey. Probably the two most implausible ideas in all of science fiction are also the most popular: faster-than-light travel and time travel. These ideas have become such a part of the fabric of science fiction that they no longer even require justification when they appear in a story. The very first time travel novel, courtesy of H.G. Wells, includes a lengthy explanation of how the time machine works, but a modern time travel story just takes the time machine for granted. And a ship can simply jump into subspace or switch on its hyperdrive with the wave of a hand, and no further explanation is necessary.

Here’s The Most Comprehensive Map Of The Universe Ever Produced 

You can now take a colorful 2 billion light year 3D joyride through the universe, courtesy of a couple of very cool videos from the University of Waterloo.

British and French astrophysicists worked together to draw up most comprehensive map of the universe ever produced and turned it into the movies above (and one below). It reminded us of a run-through of the human brain in MRI scans.

The map itself is a spherical representation of galaxy superclusters. Its creators hope it will provide key insights into one of physics’ greatest mysteries, dark matter.

Perfume From The Scent Of Your Dearly Departed: It’s Now Possible 

Dealing with the loss of a loved one can be difficult to deal with, and since pictures and home movies sometimes just aren’t enough, a French perfume company has come up with a new way to keep the memories alive: by turning their unique smell into a personalized fragrance.

According to AFP and Discovery News reports, the concept for “Eau de Parted” (not actual name) first came to 52-year-old insurance agent Katia Apalategui after she dealt with the loss of her father seven years ago. She even found herself missing the unique way he smelled.

She mentioned this to her mother during a conversation, and found that she, too, was having a similar experience–finding it difficult to wash her husband’s pillowcase, hoping to keep a reminder of her beloved’s scent.

Drone Captures Creepy Girl In Woods, Freaking Everyone Out

So, some people decided to fly their drone over Cannock Chase in Staffordshire, UK and films a strange looking girl wearing a white robe standing in the treeline. The video has gone viral since it was uploaded about a week ago. “Wow….definitely looks like a female maybe wearing a white robe….very strange.  If human, why is she out there in the woods alone?  Maybe also there’s some sort of cult activity there?!” wrote one commenter. UFO Stories Fill NYC As Terrified Earthlings Call 911 

Some Hunts Points residents called authorities to report the possible arrival of aliens from outer space. Residents spotted what they described as the flying spaceship moving quickly over East 149th Street and the Bruckner Expressway. Many witnesses called 911 including one terrified woman, according to an FDNY source.

Juan Marrero believes he too had a close encounter. Fifty-seven-year-old pigeon fancier, Marrero, said that he saw fireballs moving at a fast speed from the roof of his building at 11:30 pm. He mainly saw two bright lights streaking across the horizon. He described the quick movement as too fast for airplanes.

Andres Morales, 25, also claimed to have a close encounter. Like Marrero, he also saw the super-fast orb. He was too excited to take photos of it that he stuck his hand out the car window and snapped like crazy. He didn’t know what it was, but he saw it moving crazy fast.

The Qasr Al-Farid, The Lonely Castle Of The Nabataeans 

The Nabataean Kingdom ruled over an area that spanned from the southern Levant to northern Arabia, a position that allowed them to control the Incense Route that passed through the Arabian Peninsula. As a result of this lucrative trade, the Nabataeans grew immensely wealthy and powerful.

One expression of this wealth can be seen in the monuments they built. The most well-known Nabataean monument is arguably the al-Khazneh in Petra, modern day Jordan. Nevertheless, the Nabataeans were highly skilled craftsmen when it came to carving rock, and numerous examples of their workmanship can be found throughout their kingdom. One such monument is the Qasr al-Farid.

Nepal Tragedy: Devastating Loss Of Human Life And Ancient Heritage 

At least 4,000 people have been killed and more than 100,000 left homeless in the worst earthquake to have hit Nepal in more than 80 years. Along with the ever growing loss of life, the disaster has obliterated numerous ancient landmarks, including former royal dwellings and Buddhist and Hindu temples. While the tragic human impact overshadows the destruction of ancient buildings, the cultural loss is also devastating.

A few of Kathmandu’s destroyed buildings and structures were UNESCO World Heritage sites, some dating back many centuries.

A Buddhist temple, the Syambhunaath Stupa, built 1,500 years ago sustained severe damage. The huge, white Dharahara Tower built in 1832, crumbled to the ground. The Daily Mail reported that scores of people trapped inside the tower died. Palaces and Hindu temples were in ruins.

Human Bones In Pot May Reflect Gruesome Ritual Conducted By Army Of Queen Boudicca 

A 2,000-year-old cooking pot filled with cremated human bones has been found by the banks of the Walbrook river in London, in what was known in ancient times as Londinium, a thriving capital of a Roman province nearly two millennia ago.  The finding was made near an earlier discovery of dozens of human skulls, adding to the evidence that they are the remnants of a rebellion led by famous Celtic Queen Boudicca, who united a number of British tribes in revolt against the occupying forces of the Roman Empire in 60-61 AD.

The cooking pot was unearthed during excavations to create a new 13 mile underground railway line through London, known as the Crossrail Project, which has already yielded thousands of artifacts and human remains, including a 9,000-year-old tool making factory, prehistoric mammoth bones, a Roman road, medieval ice skates, an 800-year-old piece of a ship, and the skeletal remains of plague victims and thousands of people that had been buried in the medieval cemetery of the infamous Bedlam psychiatric hospital.

Giant Human-Like Figure Rises Up In The Plume After The Calbuco Volcanic Eruption 

This is amazing, after the Calbuco volcanic eruption in Los Lagos, Chile, on Wednesday, residents local to the area snapped photos of a thick plume of smoke and ash ejected from the volcano, from which an eerie, giant human-like figure emerged, rising up into the sky almost god-like. A local named Hariet Grunewald, 33, who lives in the town of Puerto Montt, was in the vicinity of the erupting volcano and captured the mysterious form.

The giant ash cloud that emerged after the eruption appeared a mysterious “godlike” figure. The photograph, which a cloud in the form of a human-like figure are seen by locals as a sign from the gods.

Universe Could Be A Hologram, Study Says 

At first glance, there is not the slightest doubt: to us, the universe looks three dimensional. But one of the most fruitful theories of theoretical physics in the last two decades is challenging this assumption. The “holographic principle” asserts that a mathematical description of the universe actually requires one fewer dimension than it seems. What we perceive as three dimensional may just be the image of two dimensional processes on a huge cosmic horizon.

Up until now, this principle has only been studied in exotic spaces with negative curvature. This is interesting from a theoretical point of view, but such spaces are quite different from the space in our own universe. Results obtained by scientists at TU Wien (Vienna) now suggest that the holographic principle even holds in a flat spacetime.

The Holographic Principle

Everybody knows holograms from credit cards or banknotes. They are two dimensional, but to us they appear three dimensional. Our universe could behave quite similarly: “In 1997, the physicist Juan Maldacena proposed the idea that there is a correspondence between gravitational theories in curved anti-de-sitter spaces on the one hand and quantum field theories in spaces with one fewer dimension on the other”, says Daniel Grumiller (TU Wien).

New Horizons To Study Spider-Like Patterns On Pluto 

When NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft makes its flyby of Pluto in July, scientists are hoping to get an up-close look at dark, spider-like surface patterns caused by nitrogen ice and gas eruptions triggered during the dwarf planet’s ice geyser season.

As Discovery News explained on Friday, during Pluto’s ice geyser season, sunlight hits its north pole, causing ice and gas to spray across the surface. The patterns formed as a result of this odd phenomenon have been spotted several times over the years by ground-based observatories, and by the Hubble Space Telescope, but the US space agency is hoping to get a closer look.

Past observations have been unable to resolve details of the dwarf-planet’s surface, but have managed to confirm color and lighting changes that have taken place on a grand scale over the past four years. New Horizons could shed new light on these changes.
